    8. Activate the arabic keyboard: Goto Settings>General>Keyboard>international Keyboards>Arabic

Third - Activating GPS in Egypt for Navigation or Touristic purposes {Not Military of course - LOL}

This what apple wants you to believe:

From http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2432

  1. An iPhone purchased in Egypt does not have GPS enabled. {Working by Patch}
  2. An iPhone purchased in Egypt that is used outside of Egypt does not have GPS enabled {Should work by Patch, verification needed}
  3. Any iPhone used while roaming in Egypt does not have GPS enabled {Working & Apple will be disappointed, or let us say the OTHERS who doesn’t want us to use it will be really disappointed}
  4. An unlocked iPhone used with an Egyptian carrier's SIM does not have GPS enabled {In Testing Phase}
  5. When using Maps in the scenarios above, the blue marker does not appear, and instead a circle is used to show your approximate location and other applications that use Location Services do not provide GPS coordinates.

You can activate the GPS by one of the following ways:

  1. Using a reliable Sim-Unlock, Ex. Yessim, turboSim, etc...
  2. Using the software exploit already discussed in this blog.
    Goto: Great News Everyone - Happy New Year with the Totally Unlocked iPhone 3G

So this is what I need to say since I love Egypt, Apple has just made a software modification to all the iPhones 3G ever manufactured. This modification is since Ver. 2.0, and in a specific point while updating/restoring through iTunes. The modification is simpler than all what has been rumoring around.

It doesn't rely on the coordinates as some people suggested. It’s not like if the coordinates is found in Egypt region, the GPS chip will stop communicating. It’s the software identifying the carrier, which disables the OS to communicate with the GPS.

Google maps is just an app, that gets the position through cell towers triangulation, and then specifies your coordinates from the GPS chip, which communicates/synchs with the satellites. And by the way, these satellites are not only American, it's from all nationalities.

So breaking the 5 previous points, that Apple wants us to expect, is just simple. The GPS chip as a hardware is installed in all of them, the software just stops communicating with it, once the carrier is identified in Egypt. That's why Apple is saying that even unlocked iPhones' GPS will not work while roaming in Egypt, or using any local Sim.

Check the blog link attached above, and you'll see what I mean.

Fourth - Installing all the applications you wish you got, but for FREE!!

  1. First, you need to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod from version 2.0 or higher.
  2. Open CYDIA, Goto Manage>> Sources>> EDIT>> ADD>> cydia.hackulo.us/
  3. Search for and download miPatch
  4. Goto: Appulo.us : The iPhone and iPod Touch Application Index. Download all the Apps & Games for free !!!
  5. Double-click any downloaded IPA file, and you’ll find iTunes installing it, and on your iPhone the next time you sync it with iTunes.

Great News Everyone - Happy New Year with the Totally Unlocked iPhone 3G

Well everyone, the day we were waiting for had finally come, ALMOST!!
I have two pieces of great news:
  1. The DevTeam is able to unlock the iPhone 3G till FW 2.2, but the Baseband shouldn't exceed 2.11. Baseband or Modem Firmware 2.28 is still not supported right now. The DevTeam had put a schedule; it seems they want to stick with it on New Year's Eve. So everyone who got baseband 2.11 or earlier, don't touch your iPhone till 31/12/2008. To the unfortunate guys, who I know very well, don't feel hopeless, the DevTeam, and of course me as an Egyptian, are beside you. The DevTeam is planning to continue till they unlock the 2.28, but they had to stick with the schedule, since it already took them long enough to unlock it. This unlock will not be through any software, it will be through Cydia on the jailbroken iPhones, so that's also fabulous! check there link: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
  2. The second great news, to everyone who got their iPhone from Egypt, knows very well that their GPS is banned, except if you have a reliable sim-unlock like me, and knows how to use it. Now a great man have found the solution, check this link: Hackint0ch Forums starting from Pg.15 , and you can download the Patch Here. I'm TESTING it right now!!
    HAVE FUN!!!
UPDATE-2: Please don't forget to change the permissions to 755 {VERY VERY IMPORTANT!-THANKS ADHAM}

UPDATE-1: Tested, and works great. But here are some advices:
  1. Turn off 3G & use Edge while Google Maps/GPS Tracker searches for your location. It works easier and faster when 3G is off.
  2. Download GPS Tracker, it has free registration online, to track your phone's position through internet. Track Thing is also a nice app. These apps give you the exact coordinates of your location & speed. They also synchs your iPhone 3G GPS chip with satellites, since Google Maps sometimes timeouts before doing this step.
  3. The blue dot should take less than a minute to pin-out you location only in CLEAR SKY OUTDOORS. Using the previous two apps make things smoother.
  4. In worst cases, if the GPS didn't pin you out, go to Settings --> General -->Reset --> Reset Network Settings -->Reset Network Settings confirmation. Try again after reboot, should work now.

iPhone Arabic Support - At last I can sleep Happily !!!

Hi everyone, wish you all the best and all the fun with your lovely toy, i.e. iPhone
I'll be posting the steps for what you're seeing right now, very soon, once I finalize it, and pack it all together!

As you can see, now we reached to the point where we can connect the Arabic letters.
The only drawback is the last letter at the end of the words, where the letter should be different than the one being connected in the middle of the word. {I know it's obvious, I just needed to mention it just in case!}

UPDATE: BTW, Safari just works great with this new support, hope you like what you see!

iPhone Arabic Support - One step Closer ?!

Well, while exploring the surprising Firmware 2.2 {JB ofcourse}, I crossed by something. I don't think this was in any of the older versions - Correct me if I'm wrong - see by yourself:

This wasn't possible previously, except by using a patch from installer/cydia. So I think we'll just wait for the next step, the font maybe, or just the right-to-left languages support.
Is Apple trying to make someone happy here ???
Update: Will the day come when we'll all sing: El-iPhone Betkalem 3araby !
